How Atelier Lockers Began

Every good story needs a plot twist, and ours arrived in the least glamorous way possible: a phone call nobody was expecting.

For years, a major office furniture supplier had quietly built a loyal following for one particular product — a range of wooden lockers loved by schools, gyms, and offices up and down the country. They weren't flashy. They were just good — solidly made, handsome, the kind of locker that made a changing room feel like somewhere you'd actually want to get changed. Customers didn't just buy them; they specified them by name, reordered them for new sites, and recommended them to others.

Then, almost overnight, that supplier went out of business.

For the people who'd come to rely on these lockers, it felt like losing an old reliable friend. The emails started coming in almost immediately: Can you still get these? We need more for our new building. Please tell me this isn't discontinued. We didn't have a good answer — not yet, anyway.

What we did have was a refusal to accept that the story ended there. Somewhere, we reasoned, there had to be people with the skill to bring this product back to life — we just had to go and find them.

That search led us somewhere we didn't expect: not another office furniture manufacturer, but a family-run kitchen maker just down the road, with decades of experience turning timber into exactly the kind of precise, hard-wearing joinery that a good kitchen demands. On paper, kitchens and lockers might not seem related. In practice, the skills overlap almost perfectly — precision cutting, durable finishes, hinges and hardware that need to survive years of daily use, and a genuine pride in getting every joint right.

We brought them the original specifications. We talked materials, tolerances, hinge mechanisms, and finishes late into more than a few afternoons. And, after enough cups of tea to float a small boat, they agreed to take it on.

That's the short version of how Atelier Lockers came to be — not a boardroom strategy, but a rescue mission for a product too good to lose. Today, every locker in our Signature and Bespoke collections is still handcrafted in that same workshop, built using traditional joinery techniques and finished with the same care you'd expect from a kitchen fitted for a client who notices everything.

We didn't set out to become locker manufacturers. But once we started, we couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Our Journey

Step 1

The Phone Call

A trusted supplier of much-loved wooden lockers went out of business, leaving loyal customers without a source for the product they'd relied on for years.

Step 2

The Search Begins

Rather than let a beloved product disappear, we refused to accept that as the end of the story — and set out to find someone with the skill to bring it back.

Step 3

A Likely Match

The search led us to a family-run kitchen manufacturer down the road, whose precision joinery skills turned out to be a near-perfect fit for building lockers.

Step 4

Getting It Right

After detailed discussions on specifications, materials, and locks — and plenty of meetings — the workshop agreed to take on production of the wood locker range.

Step 5

Handcrafted, Still

Every locker in our Signature and Bespoke collections is now handcrafted in that same workshop in Norfolk, with the same care and precision as day one.
